The Newton Post 2 Junior Knights American Legion baseball team ended the regular season with a split Monday night against the Rose Hill Rockets at Klein-Scott Field.

Newton lost the first game 7-4, but won the second game 8-5. Newton was held to four hits in each game, but was able to take advantage of walks, errors, wild pitches and hit batters.

In the first inning of the first game, Rose Hill used three hits and an error to score two runs. Newton loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, but failed to score.

The Rockets added four runs in the second inning.

Newton loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, leading to three runs.

Rose Hill scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.

Newton struck out in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Noah Loecke pitched three innings of relief for the win. Brett Brenzikofer pitched the seventh for the save. Trev Golubski threw six innings for the loss, striking out seven. Hunter Grey threw the seventh.

Charlie Black, Luke Witt, Ben Nunez and Brett Brenzikofer each had two hits for Rose Hill. Witt drove in three runs. Brandon Kelly drove in two runs.

Cade Valdez drove in two runs for Newton.

In the second game, Newton scored a pair of runs on an error in the bottom of the first inning. Rose Hill tied the game in the top of the second with RBI singles for Brandon Kelly and Reed Brownlee.

In the bottom of the second, Newton loaded the bases with one out. Peyton Maxwell walked to drive in a run, followed by a Griffin Davis RBI single. An error led to two more runs.

A pair of singles, an error and several wild pitches led to two Rocket runs in the top of the fifth. Newton scored in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch.

Davis pitched a complete game win for Newton, allowing five runs on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Trevor Brack took the loss for Rose Hill, allowing two earned runs on four hits with six walks and four strikeouts in four innings. Evan Brenzikofer finished the game, allowing a run on two walks with three strikeouts.

Nunez and Kelly each had two hits for Rose Hill.

Newton opens zone play July 10 at Buhler’s Wheatland Park with Buhler, Rose Hill, Andover Central, Augusta and El Dorado, Eureka. The top two teams advance to state July 18 to 22 in Leavenworth.
