Fun and games both indoors and outdoors can be had at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church's annual block party. The event will take place this year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 16 at the church's building, located at 225 S. Poplar St. in Newton.
"We call it a block party because it's basically targeting our area here and the families who live around the church," said Donna Williams, youth director for Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
A free lunch of hot dogs and chips will be served to both children and adults, whether they live next door or travel across town to attend the block party.
"It grows a little more every year that we do it," Williams said. "...We kind of use it as a community outreach, but everyone's invited."
Many families attending the event walk to the church's building, leaving plenty of parking for others and room for outdoor activities such as a sprinkler-filled obstacle course for children, Williams said.
Carnival games such as a bean bag toss and pie-throwing station will be part of the fun, along with a cake and cookie walk. Snacks, crafts and other activities will keep little hands busy throughout the block party.
"We set up quite a bit indoors, because it tends to be so hot," Williams said.
The Lutheran Early Response Team will bring two comfort dogs and share about their ministry.
"Comfort dogs are trained to basically be lap dogs," Williams said.
The dogs give comfort to individuals after traumatic incidents such as natural disasters or the death of a student or teacher at a school.
"They're real big in schools — preschools, especially," Williams said.
A Bible story time with music and puppet shows will highlight this year's theme for the block party, which comes from Psalm 23 – "Jesus is the good shepherd."
As it has in prior years, the block party will encourage children to be involved in a mission project. This year, children are invited to assist in assembling personal care kits. The supplies for the kits are provided by the church, though they will also accept donations of both hygiene items and money to support the effort.
