HUTCHINSON — The Newton Post 2 American Legion Baseball Senior Knights opened the season with a pair of wins against Hutchinson Wednesday at Rice Park in Hutchinson.

Newton rallied to win the first game 6-4 and won the second game 5-1.

In the first game, the Knights used a pair of double plays to end scoring threats in the first two innings. Hutchinson used five hits and a walk to score four runs in the third inning. Landon Dimitt had a two-run double in the inning. Eastin Heneha had an RBI single. Taryn Smith hit a sacrifice fly.

Newton put its first two runners on base in the top of the fifth, but an infield fly and double play ended the threat.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Newton drew four straight walks to score a run, followed by a two-run Jace Maxwell single.

Sport Tegethoff led off the sixth inning with a single, stole two bases and scored on an error to tie the game. With two outs, Matt Seirer walked and Colton Davis reached base on a strike three-wild pitch. Hunter Mapes then singled to scored both runners.

Newton starter Christian Malcolm went 2.1 innings, allowing four runs, five hits with two walks. Kaden Davis went the next 1.2 innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. Tegethoff finished the game for the win, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced. He struck out the side in the fifth and seventh innings

Hutchinson starter Trent Turner went three innings, allowing two hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Brody Smith went the next three innings in the loss, allowing six runs on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Dimitt finished the game, allowing a hit with three strikeouts.

No player had more than one hit. Seirer drew three walks for Newton, scoring two runs.

In the second game, Newton stranded three runners total in the first two innings, while Hutchinson stranded four. With two outs in the top of the third, Ian Akers reached first on an error and scored on an Alex Kern double. After a Tegethoff infield single off the pitcher, Kern scored on a run-down play.

Hutchinson put runners at second and third base with no outs in the bottom of the third, but only managed one run on an Austin Schneider single.

Newton tried the run-down play again in the fifth, drawing a balk to score a run.

Newton added two more runs in the top of the seventh on three hits and an error.

Tegethoff and Ben Schmidt each had two hits for Newton. Ryan Cherry, Schneider and Taylin Smith each had two hits for Hutchinson.

Newton starter Camden Fenwick went two innings, allowing a run on five hits with two strikeouts. Matt Eldridge went five innings for the win, allowing two hits, a walk and five strikeouts. Tegethoff pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.

Hutchinson starter Ryan Cherry took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Garrett Davis went three innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Kadin Pennington pitched the seventh, allowing an earned run on three hits and a strikeout.

Newton hosts the Andover Jaguars at 6 p.m. Friday at Klein-Scott Field.
