Newton fifth


SALINA — The Newton High School boys’ tennis team claimed a fifth-place finish Monday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships in Salina.

Salina Central and Maize tied for first with 44 points each. Central was awarded the league title on tie-breaker. Derby was third at 30, followed by Salina South at 24, Newton at 19, Campus at 13 and Hutchinson at 10.

Newton was led by Jason Wong, who finished fifth in singles at 3-1. Jonah Schloneger finished 14th in singles at 0-3.

The doubles team of Seth Bontrager and Zeke Thompson finished fifth at 3-1. The team of Daniel Buller and Joel Golubski finished 13th at 1-2.

Newton competes Friday at the Class 5A regionals at Salina Central. The top six singles and doubles entries qualify for state May 11 and 12 at Emporia High School.

Hesston ties

for CKL title

HILLSBORO — With two titles and two second-place finishes each, the Hesston High School and Smoky Valley High School boys’ tennis teams finished in a dead heat Monday at the Central Kansas League Championships at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.

Hesston and Smoky Valley each scored 55 points, followed by Haven in third at 34, Larned at 25, Pratt at 22, Hoisington at 16 and Hillsboro at 3.

At first singles, Hesston’s Logan Gamble downed Smoky Valley’s Cole Brumbaugh 6-0, 6-3 in the championship match.

At second singles, Smoky Valley’s Jake Lukas upset top seed Rhain Isaac of Hesston 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

At first doubles, Nick Reinert and Johan Rauschholz of Smoky Valley downed Jorge Morales and Jeb Carlson of Hesston in the finals 6-3, 6-4.

At second doubles, the team of Daniel Casimir and Isaac Decker of Hesston edged the team of Laurence Dahlsten and Matt Lucas of Smoky Valley 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the finals.

“One of our goals each season is to compete for a CKL title, and although we are sharing this one, it is our seventh in a row,” Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. “The boys competes really well in very tough conditions as the wind was tough. If we can build on this, I like our chances heading into regionals on Friday.”

Saturday, Hesston competed in the Wichita Collegiate Tournament of Champions, taking second out of eight teams in a reschedule of an earlier rain out.

Gamble was fourth in singles, while Rhain was ninth. Carlson and Morales was second in doubles, while Casimir and Decker were 11th.

Hesston hosts a Class 3-2-1A regional at 10 a.m. Friday with Central Plains, Ellinwood, Ellsworth, Hillsboro, Hoisington and Russell. The top six singles and doubles finishers advance to state May 11 and 12 at the Wulz Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.
