SALINA — The Newton High School baseball team split a pair of pitchers’ duels Thursday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play against Salina South at Matson Field in Salina.

Newton won the first game 2-1 and lost the nightcap 5-1.

The games were moved from Dean Evans Stadium because of field conditions from overnight rain in the Salina area.

In the first game, South scored in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI double by Cason Long.

Newton tied the game in the top of the third on two-out RBI double by Hunter Mapes in the top of the third. In the top of the sixth, Colton Davis led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.

Mapes finished two for four at the plate. Layne Haddock went two for four hitting for South.

Christian Malcolm pitched 4.1 innings for Newton to get the win, allowing a run on five hits with a strikeout and four walks. Sport Tegethoff finished the game for the save, allowing a hit and a strikeout.

Sterrett threw five innings for the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks. Brady McAfee finished the game, allowing two hits and a strikeout.

In the first inning of the second game, Newton scored when Colton Davis singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out and stole home.

Newton left a runner in scoring position in the inning.

A pair of singles and a pair of errors led to three South runs in the bottom of the first. The first six batters reached base.

In the bottom of the second, Long drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and McAfee drove in a run on a single.

Cole Wassenberg threw four innings for the win, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Seth Catania finished the game, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.

Matt Eldridge took the loss for Newton, allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. Kaden Davis came in and shut the door, finished the game, allowing two hits and two walks in 4.1 innings.

South is 5-7, 3-3 in league play. Newton is 5-11, 2-8 in league play. Newton hosts Hutchinson at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Klein-Scott Field.
