The Newton High School girls’ soccer team got off to a strong start, but a little complacency late nearly cost the Railers in a 2-1 win over visiting Salina South at Fischer Field in AV-CTL I play.

Newton led 2-0 before Julian Coleman scored on a breakaway in the 74th minute.

The Railers snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 6-6, 2-1 in league play. South falls to 5-6-1, 2-2 in league play.

“We were able to keep possession up top,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “In that second half, I switched things around. We went from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 trying to keep more possession up top. We started to lose the middle of the field, so we moved back to a 4-4-2 and had more success. We had a breakdown and they were able to score and they gained confidence. We had to adjust to that.”

Newton held about a 60-40 possession advantage in the first half and an 8-1 advantage in total shots.

Newton scored in the 24th minute when Abbi Jackson took a pass from Izzy Saenz and put it in.

South didn’t get a shot off until the 38th minute. Newton came back with a goal by Kenzi Gillispie on an inside pass from Aspen Olson with 19 seconds left the half.

South had a couple of shots early in the second half as possession equaled out to about 50-50. Newton was outshot 4-2 in the period.
