Newton hires

new coach

The new Newton High School boys’ basketball coach will be a familiar face.

NHS activities director Brian Becker announced Wednesday that Andy Preston will be returning as the Railer coach, succeeding Andy Hill, who resigned to become the new boys’ basketball coach at Wichita Northwest High School.

Hill served two seasons at Newton, going 18-25 overall and 14-10 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play. In the 2016-17 season, Hill led Newton to its first sub-state finals in a number of years.

Preston was an assistant coach at Valley Center and Newton for five years. He was the head coach for the 2015-16 season, succeeding his former coach Don Cameron.

As a head coach at Newton, Preston was 6-14 overall and 3-9 in AV-CTL I play.

Preston left Newton to become assistant girls’ coach at Mill Valley High School in the Kansas City area.

Preston also will resume his role as assistant baseball coach, a position he held before leaving Newton.

“We are excited for coach Preston’s return to the sideline at NHS, and know that he will continue to work hard to develop and grow the boys basketball program,” Becker said. “He brings a tireless

work ethic that will benefit our student athletes both on the court and in the classroom. Andy also understands the rich history and tradition of Railer Basketball, and what it takes to compete in the AV-CTL.”

Preston also will serve as an assistant summer strength and conditioning coach.
