The Newton High School softball team dropped a pair of games to Salina Central Tuesday in the Railers’ Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I opener at Kelsch Field.

Newton lost 10-5 and 19-2. The second game was called after three innings on the 15-run rule.

Newton trailed the first game 5-4, but was outscored 5-1 in the seventh inning. Five Newton errors led to four unearned runs for Central.

Emily Kvasnicka went three for three hitting for Central with an RBI. Annika Free went two for three, driving in two runs. Hannah Jones went two for four with two RBIs.

For Newton, Blazee Stahl went three for four with an RBI. Toria Thaw went two for three with an RBI. Regan Treffer and C.J. Garcia each added an RBI. Emily Peaney went two for four.

Carol Donatell threw a complete game for Central, allowing three earned runs, nine hits, five walks and nine strikeouts. Zoe Stonehouse went the distance for Newton, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

In the second game, Central broke the game open with 11 runs in the second inning. Peaney hit a two-run home run for Newton in the bottom of the third.

Jones went two for four for Central with a home run and five RBIs. Kallee O’Connor hit a home run and drove in three runs. Free went four for four with two RBIs. Emma Brady drove in two runs.

Central’s pitcher wasn’t listed. Stahl took the loss for Newton. Stonehouse also pitched.

Newton is 0-6 and plays at 4 p.m. Thursday at Andover Central in a weather-related make-up game.
