ELBING — With six state medalists back, the Berean Academy track teams will look for another strong season.

Lewis Wiebe returns for his 26th season as Warrior track coach. He is assisted by Anne Morrow (jumps), Paul Rust (discus), Daniel Krebs (javelin, shot) and Josh Brinkerhoff.

The Warrior girls are the defending Heart of America League and Class 2A district champions. Berean placed 11th at state. The boys were second in regionals, seventh at league and 21st at state.

Returning medalists for the girls include junior Erin Topham (4th 3,200, 6th 1,600, 2nd 4x800), senior Ashtyn Wiebe (6th pole vault, SQ pole vault), junior Mallory Wiebe (6th shot put, SQ 4x100, SQ 4x400), junior Clara Eldridge (8th 100 HH, SQ 300 LH, SQ relays) and sophomore Brooke Wiebe (2nd 4x800, SQ 800, SQ relay).

Back for the Berean boys is senior Toby Penner (2nd 300 IH, SQ 110 HH, SQ relays).

Six other athletes return from qualifying at state — senior Mackenzie Womack (javelin), sophomore David Entz (110 HH, 300 IH), sophomore Zach Dugger (javelin, will also run 400 and 800), senior Jesse Unruh (relays, will also compete in javelin and triple jump), junior James Busenitz (4x800) and senior Clayton Rust (4x800, will also run middle distance).

Other returning letterwinners include junior Grace Neal (discus), sophomore Ashtyn Matzek (distance), sophomore Lauren Regier (jumps), junior Caleb Bisterfeldt (middle distance), junior Devin Rust (shot and discus), junior Chad Unruh (shot and discus), junior Kiegan Vogt (javelin), senior Titus Funk (triple jump, middle distance) and senior James Myose (distance).

“The boys will be strong in the hurdles, should be able to compete in some of the relays,” Lewis Wiebe said. “We have a number of younger athletes who, if they develop, could help us compete fairly well.

“The girls lost some good depth from last year’s senior class. We will have a number of very strong events, and if some of the younger girls develop in some events, we should have a strong team again.”

The Warrior coach look for Sterling, Sedgwick and Bennington to challenge for Berean’s girls’ title. Lewis Wiebe looks for Marion, Bennington and Hutchinson Trinity to contend for the boys’ title.
