MAIZE — The Newton High School wrestling team fell to Maize 43-27 Thursday in an AV-CTL I dual meet in Maize.

Maize won nine of the 14 matches, four by pin. Of Newton’s five wins, four were by pin.

Grant Treaster pinned Maize’s Jarrett Patton in 38 seconds at 113 pounds. Dante Harper pinned Maize’s Michael Casement in 39 seconds at 160 pounds. Wyatt Hendrickson pinned Maize’s Alex Recio in 24 seconds at 195 pounds. Brecken Wedel pinned Maize’s Hunter Aaron at heavyweight in 24 seconds,

Trevor Waldrop scored a 7-2 decision over Maize’s Jose Ledesma at 145 pounds.

Jacob McQuiggle of Maize upset Newton’s Cyle Gautschi 3-1 at 220 pounds.

Justin Watkins of Maize edged Newton’s Sawyer Mock 5-2 at 120 pounds. Aiden Campbell of Maize scored a 5-0 decision at 132. Newton’s wrestler was not listed.

Junior Camacho of Maize scored an 11-4 major decision over Zach Engelken at 106 pounds.

Cayden Hughbanks of Maize scored a second-period pin over Newton at 126 pounds. Duwayne Villapando of Maize pinned Ben Crump in 26 seconds at 152 pounds. Talon Fitzmer of Maize pinned Bryan Cusick in 1:27 at 170 pounds. Kyle Haas of Maize pinned Brayden Miller in 34 seconds at 182 pounds.

Newton was open at 138 pounds, giving Devin Onwugbufor a forfeit win.

Newton ends the dual meet season 5-6, 3-3 in league duals. It was Newton’s second dual meet loss to Maize this season.

Newton competes in the Class 5A regionals Feb. 16 and 17 at Valley Center.

sets record

HESSTON — Hesston College sophomore Connor Atkinson set a pair of records for the Larks’ women’s basketball team Monday in a 59-40 win over the Tabor College junior varsity.

She set the records for most 3-pointers in a season at 55 and career 3-pointers at 100.

“I am very happy for Connor,” HC coach Jeff Jacobs said. “She has developed into a nice player.”

home opener

HESSTON — The Hesston College baseball team split a pair of games in its home opener against Northeast (Colo.) Community College Thursday at Oswald Field.

Hesston won the first game 9-8 and lost the second game 12-10.

In the first game, Hesston gave up four runs in the top of the seventh, but scored two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Cooper Morgan went two for four hitting with two RBIs. Ryan Morrissey went two for four with an RBI. Louis Dryden went two for two with an RBI, hitting a pair pf doubles. Joel Ogletree went two for three, both doubles. Kalen Haynes also drove in a run.

Haynes struck out five and walked six in 5.2 innings. Joseph Perez pitched the top of the seventh for the win, allowing a pair of unearned runs with two strikeouts.

Hesston scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 10-5 lead. Northwest came back with four runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh.

Nick Platten went three for four hitting for Hesston with three RBIs. Jeremy Deckinger went two for four with three RBIs. Joshua Stivers drove in two runs. Haynes went two for four hitting.

Jacob Harris took the loss, the fifth pitcher the Larks used.

Hesston is 2-4 and plays Northeast again at 3 p.m. today in a doubleheader.
