Swathers, Broncos

compete at Circle

TOWONDA — The Hesston High School wrestling team took 14th, while Remington was 15th Friday and Saturday at the Circle Invitational.

Council Grove won the tournament with 146 points, followed by Clearwater at 142, Chaparral at 114.5, Nickerson at 114, Cherryvale at 110.5, Frontenac at 102.5, Eureka at 102, Fredonia at 93.5, Buhler at 91, Douglass at 88, Ellis at 71.5, Bluestem at 69, Garden Plain at 65, Hesston at 58.5 and Remington at 58.

“This was a good tournament with quite a few state medalist caliber wrestlers,” Hesston coach Doug Broadfoot said. “We had some tough match-ups early, but wrestled pretty well in those matches.”

Hesston was led by Matt Whitsitt at 160 pounds, who finished 4-0, winning all four matches by fall or technical fall.

“It was exciting to see Matt Whitsitt dominate the 160-pound bracket, especially avenging a loss from last week in the finals,” Broadfoot said.

Sean Duerksen finished fifth at 3-2 at 220 pounds. Jason Hecht finished sixth at 126 pounds at 2-3.

Alex Koehn finished 2-2 at heavyweight.

“Jason Hecht beat a quality opponent from Cherryvale on Friday, and even though that same kid caught him Saturday, Jason knows he can wrestle with some pretty tough dudes,” Broadfoot said. “Alex Koehn wrestled a much smarter tournament than last week. Hopefully, that will carry over

for the remainder of the season. Sean Duerksen continues to show remarkable improvement for a first-year wrestler. He is getting closer and closer to defeating wrestlers that seem to have his number. As he gains experience, he’ll become a dangerous opponent.”

Riley Slater (120), Cody Wohlgemuth (152) and Owen O’Halloran (182) all finished 0-2.

Hesston competes Thursday at the CKL Championships at Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg.

Remington was led by Javier Martinez, who win at 145 pounds, dowining Brent Escareno of Eureka 7-4 in the finals.
