Treaster makes

debut for Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Newton High School graduate Logan Treaster, a freshman wrestler at the United States Naval Academy, is 6-2 in matches for the Midshipman.

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Treaster won the Ursinus Fall Brawl with a 4-0 record, winning two matches by decision and two by major decision. He downed Chris Tan of host Ursinus 3-0 in the finals.

Treaster finished 1-2 at the Navy Classic, posting his first win by fall. He also has a win by forfeit in a dual meet over Delaware Valley. He claimed a win by technical technical fall in an exhibition match against Thaddeus Stevens Tech.

Navy is 3-0 in dual meets, 1-0 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. The team won the Navy Classic and took 22nd out of 46 teams at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

The Midshipmen compete Jan. 1 and 2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Langley opens

season for EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Newton High School graduate Jared Langley, a redshirt sophomore wrestler at Eastern Michigan University, opened the season 2-4.

Langley went 1-2 at the EMU Open and 0-2 at the Keystone Classic. He has a win over Brian Wagner of Indianapolis in a dual meet.

Both wins came by decision.

Langley is 23-26 for his college career.

EMU is 4-3 in dual meets, took sixth at the Keystone Classic and 27th at the Cliff Keen Invitational.

Eastern Michigan competes Friday and Saturday at The Midlands tournament hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.

Stahly makes

debut for Tech

RUSTON, La. — Newton High School graduate Taylor Stahly, a junior guard for Louisiana Tech, is averaging 10.1 points a game in her first season of play for the Lady Techsters.

Stahly transferred to Louisiana Tech after two seasons at Hutchinson Community College, where she set several school and conference 3-point shooting records.

She has started all 12 games so far for Tech. She has hit 39 of 91 from the field, 31 of 73 from 3-point range. She has hit 12 of 12 free throws. Stahly also has 23 rebounds, 19 assists and four steals.

Tech is 8-4 and on a four-game winning streak. She has a high of 19 points in an 85-62 win Dec. 21 over Houston Baptist.

Tech hosts Alcorn State Friday and hosts North Texas State Jan. 3 in its Conference USA opener.

Thunder falls

to Mavericks

WICHITA — Eric Freschi scored two goals with three assists to lead the Kansas City Mavericks to a 7-4 win over the Wichita Thunder Saturday in ECHL play at INTRUST Bank Arena.

Greg Betzold and Matt Robertson each added a goal with two assists. Bryce Aneloski scored a goal with an assist. Mark Cooper and Justin Breton each scored a goal.

Tied 2-2 after the first period, Kansas City scored the first two goals of the second period. Wichita’s first goal was an unassisted, short-handed effort by Mark MacMillan. Ralph Cuddemi scored Wichita’s second goal with an assist from Guillaume Lepine.

Dyson Stevenson scored for Wichita late in the second period to get Wichita within a goal with assists from Lane Bauer and Etienne Boutet on a power play.

Freschi scored his second goal of the game for the Mavericks 5:25 into the third period.

Travis Ewanyk got Wichita back within a goal with 7:51 to play with assists from Chad Butcher and Stevenson. Less than two minutes later, Aneloski scored a power-play goal with assists from Patch Alber and Robertson. Breton scored an empty netter with 1:35 remaining to put things out of reach for the Thunder.

Mason McDonald had 29 saves in goal for the Mavericks against 33 Wichita shots. Shane Starrett played just 14:26 in goal for Wichita, allowing two goals on seven shots. Joel Rumple has 27 saves on 31 shots in 44:41 of play.

Kansas City improves to 15-15-0-0. Wichita drops to 18-8-0-2. Wichita plays at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Allen.
