Two men and a woman are in custody and police are searching for a weapon after an attempted burglary was followed by a high-speed chase this morning.

The incident started near Broadway and Columbus early Tuesday morning in Newton with an aggravated burglary. Officers found the car shortly after the reported burglary and attempted to pull the car over, when the driver took off. A chase ensued through Newton and onto I-135.

“It went around town (and) then went onto the interstate. At one point, he went southbound in the northbound lanes and ran vehicles off the road,” said Lt. Bryan Hall of the Newton Police Department.

The vehicle left the interstate at 125th Street and went south towards Kechi.

Police deployed spike strips; however, the driver continued to drive on flat tires — entering the interstate at K-254 in Sedgwick County.  The driver attempted to exit, then re-enter, K-254 when the vehicle crashed near Kechi at about 7:35 a.m.

Three suspects fled, one armed with a handgun, according to a press release from the Newton Police Department. A man and a woman were arrested as they exited the vehicle. The third, another man, left on foot, but was arrested after a short foot chase. No one was injured. Officers are continuing to search for the weapon.

On Tuesday afternoon, the names of those arrested were released by Newton Police. The two passengers of the vehicle were Caleb Herrod and Cassie Tyner. The driver of the vehicle was Quinton Tomlinson.

There will be charges filed in Harvey County. Initial arrests were for aggravated burglary and aggravated assault.
