At roughly 11:48 a.m. this morning, a small fire broke out at CD Custom Enterprise LLC, at 1800 SE Ninth St. in Newton.

Newton Fire/EMS chief Scott Metzler said employees at the site were using a laser cutter on a sheet of metal when the dust collector from that specific cutter caught on fire.
No one was injured by the fire, which Metzler said was quickly extinguished – by roughly 12:05 p.m.
Inside the dust collector are filters (pictured above). When an ember passes through the dust collector, Metzler said it can sometimes light the filters inside on fire.
The fire was contained to a piece of equipment, Metzler said. Newton Fire/EMS opened it up, brought most of the burning material out and extinguished it outside.
There was some additional residue inside the machine that firefighters cleaned out afterwards.
