schedule changes
The Newton High School freshman boys' and girls' basketball teams' tournament scheduled for Jan. 10 has been moved to Jan. 29.
Bowling meet
adds team
The Newton High School bowling team's meet scheduled for Jan. 16 at Northrock Lanes and hosted by Wichita Trinity Academy has added a team.
Trinity, Newton, Wichita North and Wichita Independent will now compete in the meet.
Newton grads
finish season
GOSHEN, Ind. — Three Newton High School graduates finished the season with the Goshen College men's soccer team.
Players finishing the season are freshman Mark Kreider, junior David Jantz and freshman Nathanael Dick.
Kreider played 18 games, starting 16. Dick played one game, posting a save in goal. Jantz had no stats this season.
Goshen finished 10-9-2, 4-4-1 in the Crossroads League. The team reached the finals of the conference post-season tournament.
Wingnuts trade
for rookie
WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts acquired rookie Mackenzie Handel from the Santa Fe Fuego of the Pecos League in exchange for future considerations.
Handel played for Stephen F. Austin State, where he was a designated hitter, outfielder and first baseman. As a senior, he hit .300 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. He had 10 doubles, 36 walks and 32 strikeouts. He stole four bases in five attempts. He previously played two seasons at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, where he was second-team all-conference as a sophomore, hitting .329 with four home runs, 10 doubles and 38 RBIs in 53 games.
Handel played from 2011 to 2013 with the Hays Larks, which reached the National Baseball Congress World Series.
Handel is the fifth player signed by Wichita in the off-season.
