EMPORIA — The Newton High School doubles team of Serena Wong and Savannah Sailors claimed a ninth-place medal Saturday at the Class 5A state tournament at Emporia.

After a 1-1 start Friday, Wong and Sailors downed Sarah Knight and Peyton Porting of Topeka Seaman 9-6. In the third consolation round, Wong and Sailors downed Hayley Spellman and Kathryn Kienholz of Emporia 9-4.

In the consolation quarterfinals, the Newton duo fell to Robyn Fritze and Caitlyn White of Andover 9-8 (7-5). In the consolation semifinals, the Newton pair downed Sydney Kossow and Jera Richardson of Salina Central 9-8 (7-4), who finished ahead of them at regionals. In the ninth-place match, Wong and Sailors downed Bailey Benton and Hannah Klassen of Arkansas City 9-5.

"The girls finish with a record of 28-15," Newton coach Nick Sisson said. "They had a terrific season and I'm very proud of their accomplishments."

Newton tied for 13th in the team standings. Andover won at 46, followed by Bishop Carroll at 37 and Arkansas City at 24. Newton scored seven points.

SALINA — Newton High School senior Alyssa Saenz wrapped up her high school career tied for 29th Monday at the Class 5A state girls' golf tournament at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Saenz shot a 91, missing a medal by three strokes.

Hannah Perkins of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel won the top medalist honors at 75, one stroke ahead of Emma Whitaker of Kapaun and Abby Dorsey of St. James Academy.

Kapaun won the team title at 324, followed by St. James Academy at 348 and St. Thomas Aquinas at 350.

The Bethel College volleyball team downed Grace University in four sets Saturday at Thresher Gym.

Bethel won the match 25-15, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16.

For Bethel, McKayla Brezina had 12 kills, followed by Emma Hilgenfeld and Katie Neira with 11 each. Amanda Ramsden set 34 assists. Ramsden had 14 digs, followed by Monique Sutton with 12. Ramsden served four aces, followed by Tori Kaufman with three. Ramsden and Veronica Pitchford each downed five blocks.

For Grace, Meghan Ward had 14 kills. Adriee Munoz set 29 assists. Chloe Corbett had 16 digs, followed by Ariana Zuccaro with 11 and Chelsea Entz with 10.

Bethel is 13-13 and plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Saint Mary.

BC men tie

Southwestern

Despite numerous chances to score, the Bethel College men's soccer team played a scoreless tie against Southwesten Saturday at Thresher Stadium for Fall Fest.

Southwestern had several scoring chances early in the game, but the Threshers dominated as the game went on. The Moundbuilders had just one shot total in the second half and overtime.

Bethel outshot Southwestern 24-10. Jesus Hernandez had four saves for the Threshers. Cullen Graham had 12 saves for the Moundbuilders, 3-9-1, 0-4-1 in KCAC play.

Bethel is 7-5-2, 1-3-1 in KCAC play. Bethel hosts 14th-ranked Kansas Wesleyan at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Bethel College women's soccer team fell to Southwestern 2-1 Saturday at Thresher Stadium.

Vanessa Paredes and Katie Frank each had a goal for Southwestern. Ariel Williams scored for Bethel.

The Threshers were outshot 14-9. Madison Wiles had five saves for Bethel. Olyvia Bish had three sacs for Southwestern.

Bethel falls to 6-7-1, 1-4 in KCAC play. Bethel hosts Kansas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
