Local voters will have a chance to hear from candidates at an upcoming political forum before they cast their ballots.
The Newton Business and Professional Women organization is hosting the forum from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 23 at the McKinley School Board Room, 308 E. First St. in Newton.
"We're hoping for a big turnout," said BPW member and event organizer Ellen Yocum. "... We ought to be informed about what is going on with our county, state and federal candidates."
Candidates planning to attend the forum include:
• U.S. House of Representatives District 4: Mike Pompeo (Republican) and Perry Schuckman (Democrat)
• Secretary of State: Jean Schodorf (Democrat) and Samantha Poeter (Representative for Kris Kobach)
• Kansas House of Representatives District 74: Don Schroeder (Republican)
• County Commissioner District 1: George A. “Chip” Westfall
The event coincides with BPW "Business Women's Week," and Yocum hopes it will raise awareness about the upcoming election.
"We want people to be informed before they go to the polls," she said.
Refreshments will be served at the event.
