With construction continuing on schedule, the ABI facility at the Newton City/County Airport is nearing completion.

Earlier this year, ABI Chemicals announced a new aerospace coating plant at the Newton City/County Airport. The project had an aggressive timeline, but so far, all is going as planned.

"Everything is going fine, and the project is on schedule," said Suzanne Loomis, city engineer/director of public works.

The company will occupy a new 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility and will produce next-generation aerospace coatings used in aerospace manufacturing processes being developed in conjunction with Wichita State's National Institute for Aviation Research.

According to an agreement with ABI, the city of Newton will construct the new facility and will finance the project through the issuance of bonds. The facility will then be leased to ABI Chemicals at lease rates that will cover all the debt service payments.

Eby Construction is building the facility on behalf of the city, and the project should be done in mid to late October, Loomis said. ABI will then bring in their own contractor to finish up final details on the facility. The accompanying hangar should be done by the end of the year.

The company is slated to start operating in December.
