I want to applaud the Editorial Staff of the Kansan for their very powerful rebuke of the stand our City Commissioners took in refusing to issue a letter of support on behalf of EmberCare’s intent to provide short term care for immigrant children-“the least of these, our brothers and sisters”.

In my years as a resident of this community, I have seen it, and its citizens, as compassionate, and caring. This has been demonstrated by the number of institutions initiated by the Christian churches. These include two medical and one psychiatric hospitals, four retirement centers, as well as the Methodist church’s longstanding commitment to provide care to initially orphan children and later troubled youth.

The City Commission, to be influenced by a small group of reactionaries who use false information and irrational fears that are perpetrated by unreliable outside sources is deplorable.
