Community members can help the Azteca Dance Troop reach their goal of performing on a European cruise trip by participating in a "Zumbathon" this Saturday.

The Azteca Dance Troop is made up of high school students and alumni who are passionate about dance and Mexican heritage. They have been invited to perform on a seven-day cruise to the Mediterranean during spring break. The dancers also will be able to visit ports in Spain and learn more about where the dances they perform originated from.

"It's just an incredible opportunity," said troop member Olivia Lyles. "I'm so excited. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity."

The group is hosting a "Zumbathon" fund-raiser for the trip from 7 to 10 p.m. this Saturday at the Newton Rec Center. "Zumba" is a popular dance fitness program. There is no cost to participate in the come-and-go event, but donations will be accepted.

Zumba instructors are Lyles and Ricardo Garcia, both members of the Azteca group. Two gift cards will be raffled off at the event, and the Rec Center will offer a special price on Zumba classes in October. You can buy a card for $10 that is good for three classes (the equivalent of buying two classes).

Other fund-raisers for the group include a booth at Taste of Newton, sponsored by Hendrickson Chiropractic, Davidson Dental and Newton Medical Center. Lyles also will be selling homemade cookies during the holidays.

Newton High School is not involved in fund-raising for the trip.
