HALSTEAD — Thursday’s dual meets at Halstead didn’t prove a favorable match-up for any team. In three dual meets, only 12 matches were actually wrestled. When the action was over, host Halstead-Sedgwick finished 2-0, followed by Remington at 1-1 and Cheney at 0-2. Halstead-Sedgwick downed Cheney 33-24 and Remington 29-22. Remington edged Cheney 36-30. “I like duals for the reason, you get a measurement of where you’re at if you don’t have a tournament,” Halstead-Sedgwick coach Jack Thaw said. “We didn’t have a lot of matches. We go into break 4-1.” “We had a lot of opens,” Remington coach Steve Bowman said. “All of the teams were low on numbers. The competition we had was good. Halstead’s got some good kids. The weights we did wrestle, we had some of our younger guys in matches. We got our 138-pounder Zach Thornberg back. It was his first matches this season, so it was good to get him back. It was a good night.” Halstead improves to 4-1 in dual meets this season. Remington is 2-2. Finishing 2-0 on the mat for Halstead-Sedgwick were Christian Morris at 132 pounds (a pin and a technical fall) and Alex Thibault at 160 pounds (two pins). For Remington, Thornberg posted two pins at 138 pounds. In the opening match of the day, Halstead-Sedgwick won all four matches contested, three by pin. Cheney won four matches by forfeit. Halstead-Sedgwick won two matches by forfeit. Four weight classes were open by both sides. Remington won three of its four matches against Cheney. All four matches were determined by pin. Remington won three by forfeit, including at heavyweight, which determined the meet winner. Cheney won four by forfeit. Three weight classes were open. In the Halstead-Sedgwick match against Remington, Halstead-Sedgwick won three of the four matches — two by pin and one by technical fall. Remington won three matches by forfeit. Halstead won two matches by forfeit. Five weight classes were open. Halstead sends two wrestlers — Johnson at 12-0 and Thibault at 14-0 — to the Bishop Carroll Invitational Saturday in Wichita. Remington is off until Jan. 5, when the Broncos compete at the Herington Invitational. “Alex has been second there twice,” Thaw said. “He got second as a freshman and second as a sophomore. He didn’t compete last year. We expect him to compete pretty well. Nic goes there for the first time. They’re both undefeated, but that doesn’t mean much there. Alex has 13 pins and a tech fall, but he will be challenged.”
