The Baileyville B&B defense had Thunder Ridge stymied for three quarters, en route to a 28-6 Saturday in the Eight-Man Division II Championship game at Fischer Field. B&B completes a perfect season at 13-0 and avenges a loss to Thunder Ridge in last year’s championship game. “These guys really worked hard to get back here, and that’s something I’ll treasure forever,” B&B coach Justin Coup said. “Not at one time did we play the revenge card, not at all. It was about making sure what we are capable of doing. Last year, with all the injuries we had, it was a totally different situation.” B&B junior quarterback Dustin Rottinghaus rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown and passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Dustin Deters rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown. “The line blocked great,” Rottinghaus said. We controlled the line of scrimmage the whole game. That made easy pickings.” “He’s come a long way,” Coup said. “It helps when you have seniors up front to help take care of business. I’m proud of him, and what he did on the offense. We ran no-huddle at times, and he was able to check back. That’s hardest on him. I’m really excited to have him back next year.” Rottinghaus credited the defense for the Falcons’ reversal of fortunes in the finals. “We put a new defense in this year,” Rottinghaus said. “That gave us more linebackers to stop them up front. We knew they would try a power running game.” “We were just more physical up front,” Coup said. “That was really the difference today. We dominated the line of scrimmage. We got a lot of tackles at the line of scrimmage and behind the line of scrimmage.” Thunder Ridge, 11-2, was led by quarterback Garrett Kreuger with 77 yards passing and 13 yards rushing. Trevor Lowe had 64 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving. Thunder Ridge went three-and-out on each of its first two possessions. With the Longhorns punting against a strong wind from the southwest, B&B was able to score twice on short-field drives — a one-yard Dustin Deters run and a six-yard Dustin Bergman run. “That helped a lot,” Rottinghaus said. “The defense played well the whole game.” The Thunder Ridge defense finally made a stop in the second quarter, but the Falcon defense stiffened again, setting up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Rottinghaus to Tyler Deters. B&B was two of three on two-point conversions in the first half. The Longhorns finally mounted a drive late in the first half, but it was thwarted when Rottinghaus picked off a pass as time expired. “I started from the back and coming forward,” Rottinghaus said. “I knew they had to throw it up deep. I tried to knock it down, but I was able to get it.” A long B&B drive was stopped on downs at the Thunder Ridge 20 to open the second half. Thunder Ridge went three-and-out, but the punt was fumbled back to the Longhorns on B&B 13. The Falcon defense held on downs. B&B scored early in the fourth quarter on a one-yard Rottinghaus sneak. Thunder Ridge finally sustained a drive, scoring on a 20-yard pass from Krueger to Lowe with 6:47 remaining in regulation. The pass was tipped by two B&B defenders before Lowe snagged it. B&B moved the ball all the way to the Longhorn three, where a 22-yard field goal attempt was short. The drive used almost 4 1/2 minutes.
