Donald W. Riggs, 85, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Asbury Park in Newton. He was born March 20, 1927, in Great Bend, the son of Wilfred E. and Nellie P. (Hurd) Riggs. On June 23, 1951, he married Anna Lee Waddell, and she survives. Donald was a retired electrical contractor and was active in the Newton community, including serving as the executive director for the Harvey County Builders Association and a volunteer with the Newton Public Library. He also volunteered with the AARP safe driver program. He is survived by his wife, Anna of the home; sister, Mary Van Blarcum of Topeka; nieces, Linda Wisner of Topeka, and Merri Elkins of Milwaukee, Wis. Don was preceded in death by his parents. A committal service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wichita Park Cemetery Mausoleum, 3424 East 21st Street in Wichita, with Chaplain Amy Claassen of Hardin Hospice Kansas. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Petersen Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Newton Public Library or Caring Hands Humane Society, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
