EMPORIA — Two Newton High School grads were inducted into the Emporia State University Athletic Hall of Fame this fall as members of the 1984 ESU softball team. Roselle Schmidt and Patti Paulson were members of the team, which won the 1984 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship. Emporia State finished 32-5 that year, ending the season with a 15-game winning streak, along with two exhibition wins over junior college teams. The Hornets went 5-0 in the national tournament, all of the wins by shutout. Emporia State beat Pacific (Ore.) 1-0, Northeastern State 6-0, Missouri Western 1-0 and Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis 6-0. In the championship game, Emporia State downed Quincy (Ill.) College 1-0. The team was coaches by Betty Walters. Schmidt played shortstop for the Hornets. She was named to the all-tournament team and was an All-Central States Intercollegiate Conference honorable mention. Paulson played first base, and was a four-year starter. The two were previously inducted in 2009 as part of the 1983 team that also won the NAIA national championship.
