Abilene downs Hesston, Trinity beats Halstead, Hillsbroro outlasts Marion, Sedgwick prevails over Remington, Moundridge thumps Chase County and Winfield gets by Arkansas City

Abilene 31, Hesston 20

HESSTON — Curry Sexton rushed for 235 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns to lead the Abilene Cowboys to a 31-20 win over the Hesston Swathers in Class 4A district play Thursday in Hesston.

Abilene, 6-3 overall and 2-1 in district play, advances to the Class 4A playoffs Tuesday as the district runner-up. Hesston ends the season 6-3, 1-2 in district play.

Sexton added a touchdown by pass reception.

Rob Moore had 99 yards rushing for Hesston with a touchdown. Chad Wollenberg had 88 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Michael Janzen hit six of nine passes with an interception for 61 yards. Wollenberg hit one of two passes with an interception for 23 yards.

Abilene took a 24-14 lead at the half on a 53-yard field goal by Jeremy Linn.

HALSTEAD — Tanner Engweiler rushed for 143 yards and added 108 yards in receptions, scoring four touchdowns, to lead Hutchinson Trinity to a 45-21 win over Halstead Thursday in Class 3A district play in Halstead.

Engweiler rushed for two touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception 84 yards for a score.

Trinity, 7-2, wins the district title at 3-0 and hosts Hillsboro Tuesday. Halstead falls to 5-4, 2-1 in the district. The Dragons get the runner-up spot and plays at Southeast of Saline Tuesday.

Michael Mesh had three catches for 104 yards with two touchdowns. Mesh also hit six of six PAT kicks and canned a 35-yard field goal. Derek Racette hit six of 11 passes for 210 yards with no interceptions.

Tyler Ratzlaff rushed for 66 yards with a touchdown and had 81 yards receiving. Simon McKee hit 20 of 32 passes for 180 yards with a touchdown and an interception, Cody Ratcliffe had 72 yards receiving with a touchdown. Tyler Armendariz returned a kickoff 93 yards for a score.

HILLSBORO — A two-point conversion pass from Ben Gottsch to Ben Bebermeyer proved to be the difference in a 22-21 win for the Hillsboro Trojans over the rival Marion Warriors Thursday in Class 3A district play and Mid-Central Activities Association play.

The win puts the Trojans in the Class 3A playoffs Tuesday at Hutchinson Trinity. Hillsboro is 6-2, 2-1 in district play. Marion falls to 6-3, 1-2 in district play. The two teams will share in the Mid Division title with Hoisington at 4-1.

Gottsch finished the day with 16 of 22 passes for 255 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Daniel Jost had seven of those catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Ishmael Morris rushed for 102 yards with a touchdown.

Sheldon Boone rushed for 108 yards for Marion with a touchdown. Drew Maddox and Marc Washington each added a rushing touchdown.

Tied 14-14 after the first half, Marion scored first in overtime with a 10-yard scoring run for Boone. Brian Fruechting hit the PAT kick.

Morris came back with a five-yard touchdown run, followed by the two-point conversion pass.

SEDGWICK — The Sedgwick Cardinals will finish the season with a winning record, stopping Remington 56-21 Thursday in district and Heart of America League play.

Sedgwick is 5-4, 3-3 in HOAL play and 1-2 in district play. Remington ends the season 3-6, 2-5 in HOAL play and 0-3 in district play.

Sedgwick led 35-7 after the first quarter. Jake Napper hit 14 of 16 passes for the Cardinals for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Colton Mosiman caught two touchdown passes, finishing with 56 yards. Tanner Giffin caught a 56-yard touchdown pass. Trent Stucky scored on a 40-yard pass.

Jake Napper rushed for 73 yards, followed by Wade Hansen with 53 and Tanner Giffin with 36. Hansen rushed for two touchdowns. Giffin ran for a touchdown and hit six PAT kicks.

Zach Glover led Remington, hitting 11 of 22 passes for 180 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jake Freen had four catches for 106 yards with two touchdowns. Jake Coleman rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown.

MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge Wildcats punched their ticket to the Class 2A playoffs with a 55-8 win over Chase County Thursday night in district play in Moundridge.

The Wildcats racked up 619 yards in total offense, 538 yards on the ground. Moundridge used 13 different ball carriers with six scoring touchdowns. Jayson Kaufman rushed for 142 yards with a score. Jake Janzen rushed for 99 yards and a score. Jacob Stucky rushed for 66 yards and a score. Andrew Stinchcomb, Aaron Fast and Brian Begnoche each added a rushing touchdown.

Begnoche hit four of eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Stucky caught the pass for a 41-yard score. Lance Loganbill had two catches for 40 yards.

Shawn Talkington led Chase County with 86 yards rushing and a touchdown. Talkington hit six of 20 passes for 70 yards with an interception.

Chase County ends the season 2-7, 0-2 in district play. Moundridge is 6-3, 2-0 in district play. The Wildcats host Humbolt at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Moundridge’s win pulled Peabody-Burns through to the playoffs. The Warriors play Tuesday at Olpe.

ARKANSAS CITY — In a game that affects Newton High School’s post-season chances, Winfield downed Arkansas City 48-40.

Newton now needs a win over Kapaun-Mt. Carmel today to advance to the playoffs. If Newton wins by seven or more points, Newton will be the district champion. If Newton wins by fewer than seven points, Kapaun wins the district title and Newton is the runner-up.
