BC senior named top special teams player in KCAC
— With 200 yards in total returns, Bethel College senior Mervin Brookins was named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference special teams player of the week.
Brookins, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound, kick returner, punt returner and defensive back from Stockton, Calif., had five punt returns for 160 yards and a touchdown. He had another kickoff return to the one. His long was 86 yards.Brookins had two kickoff returns for 40 yards with a long of 27.It was the second time this season Brookins has been named special teams player of the week. It was the third straight week a Bethel player has received the honor and fourth time overall.Audrey Schellenberg of Tabor was named setter of the week in volleyball. Schellenberg, a 5-6 senior from Wichita, played in eight games during two matches with 46 assists, 16 digs and two aces.Tabor’s Jessica Burden was named women’s soccer offensive player of the week. Burden, a junior forward from Little Elm, Texas, scored three goals in two games.Peabody-Burns grad Andrew Topham of Southwestern was named men’s cross country runner of the week. Topham, a sophomore, finished eighth at the Southwestern College National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Mid-States Classic Saturday in Winfield with a time of 25:48 for 8,000 meters.
