LINDSBORG — The Hesston High School volleyball team ended the season Saturday with a semifinal loss in the Class 4A sub-state tournament in Lindsborg.

Hesston opened with a 25-20, 25-19 win over Smoky Valley in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Hesston fell to Concordia 25-19, 25-20.

Concordia went on to down Abilene in the finals 25-21, 25-12, and advances to state 35-6.

“I was pleased with the way the girls came out with intensity in the first match against Smoky Valley,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We were able to finish a close first game, and we led 15-6 in the second game before Smoky Valley came all the way back to take an 18-17 lead. The girls were able to regain their composure, sided out, and Mallory Schroeder served the next six points to help close out the match.

“We knew Concordia would be a tough match, as they are tall and athletic. Concordia started out the first game with a 10-2 lead, but we stepped up at that point and outscored them the rest of the game, but couldn’t make up the deficit. In game two, it was back and forth from the start. We had a number of opportunities to capitalize on Concordia’s mistakes, but couldn’t get more than one point ahead at any time. We led late in the second game at 19-18, but Concordia was finally able to put a run of points together at that time to finish the match.”

Hesston finishes the season 18-17. The Swathers lose five seniors — Emily Dyck, Kelcie Frey, Erin King, Audra Miller and Brea Short.

“I am proud of the way the girls came ready to play against some tough competition at sub-state, and showed they could compete with the eventual state qualifier,” Peters said. “This team fought through a tough league schedule this season and came up just one win short of a league championship. We will miss our five seniors and the contributions they have made to the Swather volleyball program.”
