The state’s 12 Basin Advisory Committees are seeking public comments on the five-year revision of the State Water Plan at their meetings scheduled from today to Oct. 9.

The State Water Plan includes statewide policy management sections and river basin-by-river basin accounts of needs, goals and priority issues.

Prior to being presented to the public for formal public hearings, the plan and comments received at the committee meetings will be reviewed by the Kansas Water Authority at its Nov. 6 to 7 meeting in Pittsburg.

The State Water Plan will be finalized in January 2009.

The Neosho Basin Advisory Committee will meet at 1 pm. Oct. 9 at Marion County Lake Hall, located at County Lake 1 Office Drive in Marion.

Two new state policy issues under development will be discussed.

One of the policies calls for stream bank stabilization and wetland and riparian area protection to reduce reservoir sedimentation.

The other seeks broader use of available reservoir water.

The two proposed policies are part of the Kansas Water Authority’s Reservoir Sustainability Initiative.

For more information about the proposed policies and river basin priorities and a complete meeting agenda, refer to the Kansas Water Office’s Web site, or call (888) KAN-WATER (526-9283).
