• To the citizen concerned about helmets for motorcycle riders: I believe if “other” motorists paid more attention to motorcycles on the road, as well as their own driving habits, there would be more justification in the “no helmet” laws. Maybe you can focus your anxieties on the drug addicts and criminals in our community, of whom you “subsidize” their bills.

• I wish all those who complain about the salaries some coaches make could read all the wonderful stories about coaches appearing in The Newton Kansan. Coaches and other teachers teach a lot more than their subjects. Because of the college and NBA coaches, I have some really cheap entertainment. Coaches, as well as teachers, put in lots more time than a 9 to 5 job, and most help the students build positive self esteem. In my book, they’re worth every penny they make and probably much more.

• Sen. McCain knows how to “win wars” but doesn’t know how many houses he owns. He ridicules Obama’s timetable for withdrawing combat troops from Iraq; Condoleeza Rice reached an agreement with Iraqi leaders to withdraw them by 2011. McCain ridiculed Obama’s desire to talk to Iranian and other foreign leaders. President Bush has done just that. It seems neither President Bush nor Sen. McCain adopt the ideas they formerly ridiculed. Confusing? You bet. We can not have world peace by bullying and destroying other nations. We must gain their confidence and respect by treating them as equals.

• Building a new YMCA isn’t going to keep graduates in town. Even the convention center, what they’re talking about, I don’t see how we’re going to pay for all that. It’s going to raise more taxes. I don’t think the grads are going to stick around.

• I just have to commend the young man in front of the new Little Caesar’s pizza that holds the sign out by the street. He is the most spirited young person I think I have ever seen. He dances out there for hours and hours. I would hire that young man in a heartbeat. He’s wonderful.

• The reason we can’t have a tax-free holiday weekend in Kansas is because we have a Democrat for a governor. All Democrats like to do is tax, tax, tax. Remember this in November when voting for our next president.
