A man was killed Thursday night when he was hit by a car on South Kansas Avenue.
At about 10:45 p.m., Bradley A. Wendt, a 53-year-old white male from Redwood Falls, Minn., was walking northbound on the inside lane in the 9300 block of South Kansas when he was struck by a northbound 2005 Ford Focus, according to Chief Deputy Mark Hardtarfer with the Harvey County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to and struck him on the passenger side of the vehicle. Newton EMS and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigation indicates a possible medical condition was the reason Wendt was walking in the roadway, according to a news release. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the accident.
The name of the driver is being withheld pending further investigation, according to the sheriff’s department. At this time, charges are not being filed.
