Question: It’s open forum week. What’s on your mind?
• A big thank you to everyone who planned the Relay for Life. It was a wonderful event and a special thank you to the ladies who had the survivors tent. The refreshments was very much appreciated by the survivors.
• The sign at the new boat-launch ramp says “bewteen” instead of “between.” That'll keep people smiling as they paddle their canoes!
• Are you kidding me? The city just gave the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame $50,000 and is going to give them another $40,000 in the next four years. The city is also purchasing 60 acres of land for $700,000. That’s over $10,000 an acre. Apparently the city commissioners believe the city has an over abundant amount of money to throw around. If this is the case, no rates or taxes should be raised for at least the next five years. Remember that come budget time.
• I see the city has a new logo on the flags on the Fifth Street bridge and the Broadway bridge. I have also noticed them on some city vehicles. I would like to know how much the city spent on these new items. Since my water rates are going up, I wouldn't want the city to frivolously spend my tax dollars. I also don’t like the idea of the $1,000 new house incentive. Have you seen how many houses are for sale in Newton?
• To all of you dog owners: You may love them, but some of us don’t! We don’t appreciate all the barking all night long. There are nights you let them loose and they roam the town messing up our flower pots and gardens. Remember, where your rights end ours begin.
