All but 11 of the 42 dogs brought to Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton last week after a dog-breeding operation was raided have found new homes.

The State of Kansas Animal Health Department seized 120 dogs from the breeder, who lived near Douglass in Butler County.

Remaining to find homes are two 6-week-old toy fox terriers and nine adult dogs ranging in age from 2 to 8 years old. The breeds of the adult dogs are American Eskimo, long-haired chihuahua, pomeranian, Pekingese, schnauzer and shih tzu.

“Many of the dogs left here are between 6 and 8 years old,” said Jack Brand, marketing and public relations coordinator for Caring Hands Humane Society. “The majority of our callers are inquiring about puppies and younger dogs. There are many advantages to older dogs. I am confident that these will be wonderful companions if given the chance.“

Caring Hands expects to receive more American Eskimo dogs soon.

“We are so grateful for all the adopters who have opened their homes and their hearts to these dogs in need,” Brand said. “We hope the dogs still needing homes will find them soon.”

Caring Hands Humane Society’s online adoption application was re-enabled Tuesday morning. The online application had been disabled when staff found they could not keep up with the responses.

Applications submitted in person at Caring Hands have priority.

Other facilities that received dogs from the seizure include Great Plains in Hays, Helping Hands in Topeka, Salina Animal Shelter and the Lawrence Humane Society.
