Workers at the Harvey County Courthouse on Thursday morning seemed a little happier, probably because they were visited by a small group of preschoolers.
Children, staff and parents from New Creation Preschool took a tour of the courthouse in honor of Kansas Day. Students are studying the letter “N” for Newton, so they’re learning about Newton in honor of the state’s birthday.
“We’ve been looking at historical photos of Newton, learning unusual facts and now we’re heading downtown,” Kristin Neufeld Epp, director/teacher of the preschool wrote in an email that morning. “All the preschoolers will have a map showing the way from our preschool to our destinations.”
Children visited a variety of offices at the courthouse. They all went into the drivers license area and learned where people get their photos taken. Next, they filed in to the office where people pay taxes. There, Joyce Truskett, county clerk/election officer, handed the children small flags, which they carried with them throughout the tour.
They also visited county administrator John Waltner’s office and got to see a district court courtroom where David Yoder, county attorney, and District Court Judge Joe Dickinson spoke to them. Dickinson even handed out some candy to the kids.
After that, children visited the 911 dispatch center and heard from dispatcher Liz Sauerwein.
On Thursday, children also visited Pages and Newton Public Library. Today, they planned to visit the police station.
