Newton athlete
places at nationals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Brooke Regier of Newton placed second in the shot put at the AAU Northern Nationals Feb. 19 through 21 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.
Regier, competing in the intermediate division (born in 1994 and 1995), had a mark of 15-11 1/2. There were 12 athletes in the competition.
Regier is a freshman for the Newton High School track team.

Black-Gold World
Series scheduled

The Newton High School baseball team is hosting its annual Black and Gold World Series intra-squad scrimmages March 17 and 18 at Klein-Scott Field.
The games begin at 6 p.m.
The Newton High School alumni baseball game will be at 6 p.m. March 19 at Klein-Scott Field.

Oral Roberts falls
in Summit finals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Oral Roberts University women’s basketball team fell to South Dakota State 79-75 in overtime Tuesday in the championship game of the Summit League Tournament at Sioux Falls Arena.
Down by nine with 3:42 remaining, the Golden Eagles went on a 9-0 run to send the game into overtime.
Newton High School graduate Janae Voelker scored 10 points with nine rebounds for ORU. Jaci Bigham scored 28 points to lead ORU. Kevi Luper added 17 points. Jordan Pyle scored 12 points.
Kristin Rotert led SDSU with 21 points, followed by Maria Boever with 18 and Ketty Cornermann with 17. The Jackrabbits improve to 22-10 and receive an NCAA automatic bid.
ORU falls to 23-9. As the Summit League’s regular-season champion, the team receives an automatic bid to the Women’s NIT if the team fails to receive an NCAA at-large bid.
Tournament selections are made Sunday.

Wild to host
food drive

PARK CITY — The Wichita Wild indoor football team and the Students in Free Enterprise at Wichita State are having a food drive benefiting the Kansas Food Bank prior to Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Sioux Falls Storm.
The drive is being conducted as part of Campbell Soup’s “Let’s Can Hunger” campaign.
Fans bringing in a non-perishable food item to the game can get reserved-seat tickets in rows 12 through 17 for $6. Students will begin accepting donations at 5:30 p.m.

Wichita Thunder
falls to Eagles

WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder fell to the Colorado Eagles 8-1 Wednesday in Central Hockey League play at Intrust Bank Arena.
Tied 1-1 in the first period, the Eagles scored seven unanswered goals, five in the second period and three in a 92-second span.
Ryan McLeod scored two goals with an assist for Colorado. Brett Lutes also scored two goals. Kevin Ulanski, Ed McGrane, Riley Nelson and Jay Birney each scored a goal with an assist.
Joel Hanson scored Wichita’s lone goal.
Scott Campbell stopped 25 of 30 shots in goal for Wichita, taking the loss. Ian Kerserich stopped 17 of 20 shots. Colorado’s Andrew Penner posted the win in goal, stopping 21 of 22 shots.
Wichita plays at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Amarillo.
