The Newton High School girls’ basketball team got a measure of payback Friday night, stopping Hutchinson 51-41 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at the Salt Hawk Activity Center.

Newton improves to 9-6, 4-3 in AV-CTL I play. Hutchinson falls to 9-5, 4-3 in AV-CTL I play. Newton avenges a three-point loss to Hutchinson earlier this season.

“We played a complete game,” Newton coach Randy Jordan said. “There was a spot in the second quarter where they got out and guarded us hard. We made some adjustments at halftime to better handle the pressure. Emily Hiebert did a great job guarding (Shelby) Morford. She’s left-handed. So we tried to take her left hand away, so she couldn’t go to the rim. She still had 11, but she had 23 the first time we played them. She didn’t have any 3-pointers. My feeling is how Morford goes is how Hutch goes.”

Abby Pendry and Abbie Lehman each scored 12 points for the Railers. Freshman Taylor Stahly added nine points on three 3-pointers.

Taylor Mayes added nine points for the Salt Hawks.

“Abbie handled Taylor Mayes well all night,” Jordan said. “They are an athletic team. But the competition we played last week, we don’t have reason to fear anyone. Taylor shot the ball well. She spotted up. She had a big game. She handled the pressure well. Maddie was a floor general for us. She wanted the ball in her hands.”

Newton jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Hutchinson ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut Newton’s lead to three, 12-9.

The Railers struggled from the field in the second quarter, allowing Hutchinson to get within one. Newton responded with a run of its own to go back up by seven, sparked by Lehman layups inside. A pair of Sydney Small free throws with 18.6 seconds remaining in the half cut the Railer lead to five at intermission, 23-18.

Newton killed almost two minutes to start the second half, but turned the ball over twice. A Hiebert layup off a steal opened the second half scoring. A Stahly trey put the Railers up by eight with 2:29 left in the quarter. Pendy followed with one of two free throws 44 seconds later. Small hit two free throws with 14.7 seconds left in the period to get Hutchinson back within seven, 34-27.

Fouls were 7-2 against Newton in the period. Fouls would go Newton’s way in the fourth quarter.

Pendry opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play to put Newton up by 10. Katlyn Engweiler countered with a trey. Newton then hit two of four free throws. Pendry missed the front end of a one-and-bonus with 4:07 remaining in regulation, but stole the ball after the rebound and hit the layup.

Kelsi Langley hit one of two free throws, then hit a layup off a Pendry steal to put Newton up by 12 with 1:56 remaining. Hutchinson cut the lead to eight late.

“We were trying to run a four-out to get the ball to Kendra (Scott),” Jordan said. “They brought Mayes back in, and that took away the mismatch. So we just stayed out there. They started fouling us.”

Newton hosts Derby at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“They are playing very well right now,” Jordan said. “We didn’t play well against them the first time we played them. They have been hanging with everyone they’ve played. They’re athletic. We still have to go out and play well.”
