Heat to host fund raiser
The Heat softball organization will be holding a Wendy’s Community Night from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Newton Wendy’s.
A portion of the sales will go to support the Heat softball teams for the purchase of training equipment.
The Heat sponsor girls’ fast-pitch softball teams in the 12U, 14U and 16U divisions with players from Newton, Hesston, Halstead and Chase County. The teams placed in state and world tournaments last season.
Players will host a meet-and-greet at the event.
Hesston signs softball player
HESSTON — Hesston College softball coach Andrew Sharp signed Bri Nevil of Berne, Ind., to a letter of intent to play with the Larks beginning this fall.
Nevil is a catcher-utility player from South Adams High School in Berne.
She is a three-time all-conference player. She was her team’s defensive MVP. As a freshman, she set the school record for fewest defensive errors in a season, leading her team to a sectional championship.
“Bri was excited about her opportunities here when she visited in the fall, and needless to say, the feelings were mutual,” Sharp said. “She’ll have a chance to jump right into the mix and contribute in a variety of ways. We’re excited to get her here in August.”
She is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society. She attends First Missionary Church in Berne. She intends to study pre-medicine at Hesston.
