It was an all-Kansas City area finish for the 61st Newton Mexican-American Men’s Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which concluded Sunday at Kelsch Field.
The dominance was capped when the Kansas City Angels repeated as tournament champions, stopping the Kansas City Indios 7-3 in the championship game.
It was the sixth tournament the Angels have played in this summer, the third top-three finish and first win.
In the first game of the finals, the Angels jumped out 6-2 in the first three innings. The Indios added a run in the bottom of the fourth to get within three. Loya hit an RBI double in the top of the sixth for the Angels.
“We knew we had to get out to a good start early,” Angels manager Manual Hernandez said. “We did a pretty good job of that. They are a good opponent. We knew we had to play well against them.”
Pitcher Yuri Loya went the distance, allowing three runs on nine hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Loya was named most valuable pitcher in the tournament. Loya pitched out of a couple of jams that would have kept the Indios in the ballgame.
“Once he settled down, we knew he would be hard to hit,” Hernandez said. “We started bearing down on defense.”
Fernando Esquivel went three for three hitting for the Angels with a run scored and an RBI. Esquivel was named the most valuable player in the tournament. Chris Medina went two for three with two RBIs. Al Hernandez went two for four hitting with an RBI and two runs scored.
Luis Orpeza went two for three hitting for the Indios with an RBI. Gerry Garcia went two for four hitting.
Mike Fernandez took the loss pitching for the Indios. Jaimie Garcia Sr. went 4 2-3 innings, holding the Indios to a run on three hits with two strikeouts.
The Angels received a first-round bye, downed the Hutchinson Angels 8-0 and the Kansas City Indios 2-1. In the semifinals, the Angels overcame a 4-0 deficit in the first two innings to down the Kansas City Reds 5-4. A hit batter with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning run.
The Indios downed Team Topeka 14-0 and Salina Bud Light 9-2 before falling to the Angels in the quarterfinals. The Indios then beat the Kansas City Banditos 5-2, Newton J Train 10-0 and the Kansas City Reds 7-5. The Reds finished third.
“All three (Kansas City) teams are used to playing each other,” Manuel Hernandez said. “We play each other in league and in other tournaments. The Indios are good competition. It’s always a good game when we play them.”
Hernandez said his team has another tournament coming up in Kansas City, followed by a national tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Newton J Train was the highest finishing area team, finishing fourth. The J Train downed the Kansas City Locos 6-5, lost to the Kansas City Reds 5-3, beat Salina Bud Light 14-2 and lost to the Kansas City Indios 10-0.
The Newton Mexican-American Athletic Club finished 0-2, losing to the Kansas City Locos 9-4 and Salina Bud Light 8-6. Newton Los Traviesos lost to the Hutchinson Angels 11-0 and the Kansas City Eagles 10-1.
