Wingnuts rally to stop Explorers

WICHITA —

The Wichita Wingnuts used a three-run seventh inning to claim a 4-3 win over the Sioux City Explorers Thursday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Wichita improves to 31-14, while Sioux City falls to 20-25. The Wingnuts are 9-1 against the Explorers this season.

Michael Thompson finished two for three hitting for Wichita with an RBI. Brennan Herrera went two for four with an RBI. Josh Horn went two for three. Joseph Muich went two for four. Nick Blasi and Kelly Hunt each added an RBI.

Wichita starter Gabe Medina went seven innings for the win, improving to 6-2. Medina allowed five hits, two earned runs, five walks and six strikeouts. Richard Salzar retired the last two batters he faced for his third save of the season.

Ty Marotz (2-7) took the loss for Sioux City in relief of Nick Singleton.

Former WSU player Derek Schermerhorn went two for four for Sioux City.

Justin Nelson drove in two runs.

Wichita ends the first half of the season with a three-game road series at Lincoln beginning at 7:05 p.m. today.
