After a 4-2 trip to Oklahoma last week, the Newton Senior Knights returned to play Wednesday at Klein-Scott Field to host the Andover Central Jags in American Legion play.
The Knights struggled to a 19-3 defeat in the first game but rebounded to win the second game 11-3. Both games ended in six innings on the eight-run rule.
“We just couldn’t throw strikes or hit our spots,” Newton manager Mark George said of the first game. “That led us to a situation where we could only throw fastballs over the plate for a strike, which is frustrating. You have to give Andover Central credit for hitting the ball. We just mentally just broke down. We collapsed defensively. It was not a good game for us, which is disappointing because we played so well in Oklahoma. We played some really good competition there. This was a big doubleheader because Andover Central is a good 5A program that went to state this past (school) year. It’s a team we’ll play at zone.”
In the first inning of game one, Matt Moreland was hit by a pitch and scored on an Evan Gilbert single. Andover came back in the top of the third, scoring two runs on four bloop singles. A single and two errors gave Newton a run in the bottom of the third.
A leadoff error in the top of the fourth set up a two-out, two-run single by Evan Payne. Andover added three more runs in the fifth on a Brian Lindstaedt double with two outs. Evan Thomas doubled, went to third on a balk and scored for Newton on a Thomas sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.
The wheels came off for Newton in the top of the sixth, allowing 12 runs.
Lindstaedt finished two for four with five RBIs. Evan Payne went two for four with four RBIs. Logan Stevenson went two for four with two RBIs. Landon Huslig went three for three, scoring four runs.
Gilbert and Cody Opland each had two hits for Newton.
Heath Blake got the win for Andover, going 4 2-3 innings of relief when Andy Hewitt went out with an injury. Newton starter Joey Buchanan took the loss.
Andover opened the second game with three runs in the first inning on three singles and a walk. Kyle Preston hit a two-run double for Newton in the bottom of the first. Newton used three errors in the bottom of the second to score three runs.
Newton added three more runs in the third and one in the fourth. With bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fifth, Nathan Briar struck out two and got a ground out to get out of danger. Matt Moreland walked and scored in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Kevin Ronen drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Kyle Boulet single to end the game.
“I was really happy how we bounced back after the first game,” George said. “I was really disappointed and didn’t want to talk to them. I let them alone. They came back on their own. That was all on their own. They had a little gut check.”
Briar went the distance for the win in the second game, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Briar battled out of jams in the third and fifth innings.
“He settled in.” George said. “The biggest moment for him was in the fifth inning, when he got bases loaded and went strike out, strike out, ground ball out. That’s just how Nathan is. Mentally, he is always there. He needed to have a good outing. He hasn’t had a good outing this summer yet. He threw three pitches for strikes. He got roughed up a little in the first inning but pitched well after that.”
Boulet finished three for four hitting. Jesse Jerde and Baxter Schmidt each had two hits.
Payne went two for three hitting for Andover. Lindstaedt took the loss for the Jags.
Newton is 11-5 and hosts Pratt at 6 p.m. today.
“That’s going to be another good doubleheader,” George said. “We split with them last year. I hope we come out with a better approach early on and take care of business.”
JUNIOR LEGION — The Newton Junior Knights split a doubleheader against the Wichita Sox Monday at Klein-Scott Field. Newton lost the first game 11-7. Bryce Staley had two hits for the Junior Knights. Newton won the second game 8-7. Staley hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Staley and Austin Jones each had two hits. Zach Stanley won the game in relief of Ryan Blosser and Jacob Bartel. Newton allowed just three walks in the second game.
Newton plays the Sox at 2 p.m. Friday.
