The Bethel College men’s basketball team looked sluggish the entire game, falling to Friends 76-62 Saturday in KCAC play in Wichita.

Bethel falls to 3-20, 3-11 in KCAC play. Friends improves to 12-14, 7-7 in KCAC play.

“This team has reverted back to the way we played early in the year — lifeless with no emotion,” Bethel coach Alonzo Jamizon said. “We just didn’t have anybody who was willing to step up and be that leader on the floor. They beat us by 11 the first time and 14 this time. We play like we played the last four or five ganes, and it’s a lot tighter. I’m not going to say we would win, but it would have been a lot tighter. We’ve got to figure it out. We had some success. We had a two-game winning streak. Great. You can’t sit on your laurels. You have to play another game.”

Reggie Britton led Friends with 18 points. Colton Rausch added 11.

Justin Baldia led Bethel with 15 points. Lee Griffin and Trey Ronnebaum each scored nine points.

Bethel fell behind 6-0 early. Bethel never got closer than three points in the half. Friends led by as many as 11 midway in the half. Bethel got within seven on a pair of Griffin free throws with 1:30 remaining in the half, but Friends ended the half on a 6-0 run to lead 38-25 at intermission.

“They got a couple ‘and-ones,’ ” Jamison said. “We got away from the things that kept it close. We gave them a basket, plus a free throw. A team like that is going to hit its free throws.”

Bethel was eight of 28 shooting in the first half for 28.6 percent, while Friends was 15 of 29 for 51.7 percent.

Friends opened the second half with a 7-0 run, putting the game away. Bethel did cut Friends’ lead from 28 to as few as 14.

“We finally decided we wanted to play,” Jamison said. “I’m trying my darnedest to get them to play like that at the beginning of the game, not when we’re 20 points down. We have to come out with a sense of urgency.”

Bethel plays at 8 p.m. Thursday at home against Tabor.

“After the beating we took at their place, we have to come ready to play,” Jamison said.
