Burrton girls win Class 1A cross country regional title

WICHITA — The Burrton High School girls’ cross country team handily won the Class 1A regional meet Saturday at the Cessna Activity Center in Wichita.
Burrton scored 10 points, followed by Pretty Prairie at 33, Caldwell at 41, the only girls’ teams to score. All three teams qualify for state.
Burrton medalists include Meghan Navarro, who took third in 17:33, followed by Maria Fernandez in fourth at 17:42, Valerie Wallsten in sixth in 17:51 and Kailey Gardner in seventh in 17:52.
Elizabeth Simoneau took 16th in 19:17, and Kristen Pearce took 22nd in 21:04.
The sole runner for the Burrton boys was Trae Lane, who took 12th in 19:24, missing state qualification by two spots.
The Burrton girls compete at the Class 1A state meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wamego Country Club.
