The Newton middle schools eighth-grade A girls’ basketball team lost its regular-season finale Thursday to Robert Goddard 49-27 but opened play in the Pioneer League Division I tournament with a 43-24 win over Derby Red in the semifinals.
“Since before the Christmas break, we have improved a little each game,” Newton coach Bob Graber said of the Robert Goddard game. “Goddard shot the ball extremely well, making 23 of 50 field goals for 46 percent. They were a much larger team, yet they only had one more rebound than we did. We shot the ball very well from the free throw line, making seven of eight attempts.
“The girls came out strong (against Derby Red), dominating a team that had beaten them by 13 points in the third game of the year and by four points in double overtime three weeks ago. The players opened a 26-6 lead by halftime and played even with them the rest of the way. This was by far our best game of the season and the girls have put themselves in position to win the tournament on Tuesday evening at the Chisholm Gym.”
Newton is 6-8, 4-4 in Pioneer League play. Newton plays Hutchinson at 6:45 p.m. today in the tournament finals.
