Hesston wrestlers
compete at Circle

TOWANDA — The Hesston High School wrestling team claimed three medals out of six wrestlers competing Saturday and Sunday at the 22-team Circle Invitational.
The Swathers finished 17th.
The Swathers were led by Parker Broadfoot at heavyweight, who finished 3-1 to take second. Parker lost in the finals to Cody Huffman of Douglass 3-2 in the finals. His three wins were all by pin in the first period.
Zach Weber took fifth at 140 pounds at 4-2.
Kevin Schultz finished sixth at 215 pounds at 4-2.
Matt Emerson finished 2-2 at 112 pounds. Keller Broadfoot finished 0-2 at 145 pounds. Dalton Anderson lost by injury default in the first round at 135 pounds.
“This was a huge tournament, so with our lack of numbers, our goal was to get quality matches, wrestle tough and get as many team points out of our wrestlers as we could,” Hesston coach Doug Broadfoot said. “We did that for the most part. Parker Broadfoot wrestled very well in the finals, getting beat by the state runner-up 3-2. He pinned the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the semifinals. We are thrilled with the vast improvement Zach Weber has shown in the last two weeks. He is determined to improve each week, which will benefit him as we close our season. We close out the regular season this Thursday at home in duals versus a tough Lyons team and Nickerson.”

Tabor signs three
volleyball players

HILLSBORO — The Tabor College volleyball team signed three area players to letters of intent to play for the Bluejays this fall.
Players signed include Jessi Vogts and Holli Wolf, both of Moundridge, and Rachel Phillips of Halstead.
Wolf is a 5-foot-4 setter for Moundridge High School, helping lead the Wildcats to a Class 2A state title this fall. She is a two-time first-team All-Heart of America League pick, a two-time Hutchinson All-Area pick and a two-time All-State Tournament Team Selection. She was a second-team All-Class 2A pick as a junior and a first-team pick as a senior.
“Holli’s great hands as a setter and tremendous court awareness will add strength to our offense,” Tabor coach Amy Ratzlaff said. “She has been exposed to running a solid offense for years and understands strategy. Holli holds the career record for assists at Moundridge and I think that speaks volumes for her ability. Aside from the volleyball court, she is just a natural fit with the team and will add to the spirit of Tabor volleyball.”
Wolf is a member of the National Honor Society, is on the high honor roll and is a four-year academic letterwinner.
Vogts is a 6-0 outside hitter for the Wildcats. She was named the Hutchinson News Area Player of the Year. She set the single-season record for kills as a senior. She is a two-time first-team All-HOAL pick, a two-time first-team all-area selection, a two-time all-state tournament team selection, a second-team all-state pick as a junior and a first-team all-state pick as a senior.
“I’ve seen Jessie grow up over the years and turn into one of the best hitters in Kansas,” Ratzlaff said. “Winning ballgames is in her blood and you can sense that when you see her play. Being named All-Class Player of the Year and breaking the school’s single season kill record are indicators of the impact she could have on our program. For many years, she was in our gym and part of our program as her sister played at Tabor. Now it feels like Jessie is already one of us and we are ready to see her contribute to the program.”
Vogts is a four-year member of the high honor roll and a four-year recipient of the Scholar-Athlete award.
“We are thrilled to sign Holli and Jessie,” Ratzlaff said. “They are exceptionally talented and come from a program with a very strong tradition of excellence. They have been trained well, and they know how to win. Those qualities will immediately impact our program.
“An outside hitter and her setter often have a special connection. Jessie and Holli are no exception. Individually they are both outstanding athletes. These two have played together for so long that together they could be an unstoppable pair.”
Phillips is a 5-7 setter from Halstead High School. She also will play as a defensive specialist at Tabor. She is a two-time All-Mid-Central Activities Association pick, a two-time All-Canton-Galva Invitational selection and a 2009 all-area selection.
“I have watched Rachel develop as a player over the last couple of years and am thrilled to see the level of play she has accomplished,” Ratzlaff said. “She is a very strong and competitive athlete who is in the mix of many great things that happen on the court. Her setting, serving, and defending will be a huge asset to our team, and her fun spirit will be an asset to the whole Tabor community.”
Phillips is the sister of current TC player Mandi Phillips. She is the student body secretary, treasurer for KAYS and a member of the honor roll.

Hesston College
signs two spikers

HESSTON — Hesston College volleyball coach Kristin Rhodes signed two players to letters of intent to play for the Larks this fall.
Players signed include Kate Steury of New Paris, Ind., and Nicole Chapman of Kansas City, Kan.
Steury is a 5-foot-11 outside and middle hitter from Bethany Christian High School in Goshen, Ind. She led Bethany Christian in kills with 273, the second all-time best in school history. She received the team’s sportsmanship award. The team finished as sectional runners-up the past two seasons.
“Kate has a lot of raw athletic talent that I am excited to see develop over the next couple of seasons,” Rhodes said. “She brings a positive, bubbly demeanor to the floor that will help the team. She is very carefree, and I expect her ‘don’t worry about it; let’s get the next one’ attitude to be contagious.”
Steury was involved in cheerleading at Bethany Christian. She was on the honor roll for three semesters and on the high honor roll once. She is a Hesston College Dean’s Scholarship recipient.
She was active in the North Goshen Mennonite Church youth group and in the worship group.
Chapman played at Turner High School, which finished second in sub-state in 2007. She was a four-year player, a two-year starter and a team captain as a senior.
“Nicole is ready for the challenge of college volleyball,” Turner High coach Anita Vanderpool said. “I’m confident she will rise to the occasion.”
“Nicole brings a lot of varsity and club experience to the court,” Rhodes said. “She has a sound knowledge of the game and expects her teammates to work hard. I think her drive and leadership skills will be valuable for us next fall.”
Chapman was a freshman starter on the softball team at Turner. She is an honor roll student.
She is a member of New Life Family Church in Kansas City, Kan. She is a member of the church choir, a volunteer in the nursery and with community clean-up projects.
Chapman intends to major in nursing at Hesston.
