Swather spikers
0-3 at Clearwater

CLEARWATER — The Hesston High School volleyball team finished 0-3 Saturday at the Clearwater Invitational.
Hesston fell to Rose Hill 25-16, 25-12; Clearwater 25-13, 25-20; and Haven 20-25, 25-7, 25-21.
“We knew Rose Hill would be tough, and they are a very talented and athletic team that we didn’t match up well with,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “Against Clearwater, we had our chances, especially in the second set, when we were ahead 18-14, but we weren’t able to get good passes on serve receive and we let them come back to win the match.
“Our defense was not very strong against Haven in the first set, but the girls bounced back and were determined not to finish the tournament with a loss. We led 22-2 at one point in the second set before Haven made a small run at the end. In the final set, we jumped ahead early and were able to keep them from getting closer than two points throughout. Our defense was much better in the final two sets of the Haven match, and hopefully this win will get us back on track and will be the start of some good things to come next week.”
Hesston is 16-15 and plays its final Mid-Central Activities Association matches Tuesday at Smoky Valley with Hillsboro. Hesston plays Saturday in the Class 4A sub-state at Valley Center.
