Eighth-grade girls
Newton A 28, Hutchinson 27

HUTCHINSON — The Newton middle schools eighth-grade A girls’ basketball team downed Hutchinson 28-27 Thursday in Hutchinson.
“We played a good first quarter, a fair second quarter, a poor third quarter and a good fourth quarter,” Newton coach Bob Graber said. “During the second and third quarters, we let Hutch’s pressure defense bother and frustrate us. This is our first game where we came back from a deficit in the fourth quarter to win. In our last two losses, we came back and fell short. We came back and lost in double overtime. So I think we have reached a point as a team that we can truly come back and win. Hutch had two girls that were 6-foot-2 or taller, and we still outrebounded them by 10. Our free throw shooting and offensive rebounding won this game for us. We finished league play in third place.”
Newton improves to 5-6, 4-4 in Pioneer League play.
