The Newton High School soccer team got a rude welcoming to Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play Tuesday night, falling to Hutchinson 3-0 at Fischer Field.
Hutchinson scored on three of its four chances. Newton had about six or seven chances, outshooting the Salt Hawks 6-4, but either sent the ball over the crossbar or had the chance turned away.
Hutchinson keeper J.D. McKee had four saves. Newton’s Nat Dick had one save.
“Right at the first of the game, we’re missing opportunities,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We’re missing inside the six. That’s almost impossible. This is the second game in a row where we gave up three goals. Our defense needs to play stronger. When we’re in play, we need to keep possession of the ball. We need some senior leadership. That hasn’t happened this year. There’s a lot of new faces.”
Newton had the first two scoring chances of the game, putting a pair of open shots over the crossbar. Hutchinson didn’t have a scoring chance until the 14th minute, scoring on a breakaway by Tyler Lowden.
Hutchinson scored in the 26th minute on a crossing pass from Cody Burgey to Tim Wise. The Salt Hawks scored in the 34th minute on a direct kick play from Bergey to Jalen Getting.
Newton controlled the ball much of the second half, outshooting Hutchinson 4-0 early in the period
“I told the guys not to go into panic mode,” Jantzi said. “It’s our second game in. Our future is bright. We just need to find the right combinations. The lack of communications is causing a lot of problems. It will come.”
Newton is 0-2 and plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Andover.
