Goessel grad plays for Kansas stars

HAYS — Goessel High School graduate Craig Banman had 26 yards rushing, 51 yards passing and 64 yards receiving for the Kansas Eight-Man All-Stars Saturday in the Kansas-Nebraska Eight-Man All-Star Game at Lewis Field in Hays.
Banman added 70 total return yards.
The Nebraska stars edged Kansas 20-12. Nebraska scored on a one-yard Brend Jorgensen run, a one-yard Brett Kaczor run and an eight-yard Andrew Bauer run.
Kansas scored on a 31-yard pass from Kory Lonberger from Mason Salmans and a Zach Cyphers fumble recovery in the Nebraska end zone.
Kaczor of Ewing High School led Nebraska with 39 yards rushing on 15 carries and hit seven of 14 passes for 124 yards. Bauer of Elgin High School had three catches for 80 yards.
Salmans of Pawnee Heights led Kansas in passing, hitting 12 of 28 for 150 yards. Banman was the leading rusher. Matt Rottinghaus of Baileyville B&B had four catches for 107 yards.

Wingnuts down Sioux City

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts won for the 30th time this season on pitching coach Luke Robertson’s 30th birthday, stopping the Sioux City Explorers 4-2 Tuesday in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Wichita clinched its first-ever AA playoff berth with a 2-1 win Sunday at home against St. Paul. The Wingnuts claimed the AA North Division title for the first half of the season. Wichita will play the second-half champ in the playoffs.
Greg Porter did most of the offensive damage for the Wingnuts, 30-13, going two for three with three RBIs. Dustan Mohr hit a solo home run. Stephen Pearson went two for four hitting.
Dustin Jones went three for four hitting for Sioux City. Justin Nelson went two for four with an RBI.
Sioux City falls to 19-24.
Wichita starter Derek Blacksher went seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Doug Hurn pitched the eighth inning. Richard Salazar pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.
Sioux City starter Tyler Meigs took the loss, falling to 0-4.
The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today at Lawrence-Dumont. Five games remain in the first half of the season.
PITCHER SIGNED — Wichita signed pitcher Julio Torres Tuesday and released Amad Stephens. Torres attended Odessa College in Texas, going 12-1 as a sophomore with a 3.81 earned-run-average in 85 innings with 85 strikeouts.
As a freshman, Torres went 7-3 with a 2.67 ERA.
Odessa qualified for the NJCAA Division I, Region 5 tournament.
Stephens went 2-0 in 14 1-3 innings this season with eight saves and an 8.79 ERA.

MOHR HONORED — Mohr was named the American Association batter of the week for the week ending Sunday. Mohr was 13 of 32 from the plate (a .406 average) with 10 RBIs.
