The Newton High School boys’ basketball team got off to a strong start against the Hutchinson Salt Hawks, but went cold from the field with too many turnovers in the second half, falling 47-36 Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play in Hutchinson.

Newton went from 11 of 18 shooting in the first half to three of 18 in the second half. The Railers had five turnovers in the third quarter, 13 for the game.

“The first half, the way we executed was awsome — both offensively and defensively,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “Our next challenge is to do that for two halves. That’s three out of our last five games, we’ve done that against good teams. Mentally, in the second half, we lost our edge a little bit. We didn’t excute. I don’t know if we were tired. We have to figure it out. Something good is going to happen for these kids. We missed a lot of bunnies, eight in the second half.”

Jerome Roehm led Hutchinson with 12 points. Tanner Higgins added nine points, hitting three first-quarter 3-point shots,

Newton was led by Jenson Kingsley with 15 points. Grant Walker added eight.

Newton jumped out to an 8-2 lead early, but Hutchinson started hitting from the 3-point line and the free throw line to lead 18-12 at the end of the quarter.

Newton made a run to start the second quarter, leading by as many five. Hutchinson got back within four at the end of the quarter, 30-26.

Railer turnovers allowed Hutchinson to make a 13-2 run to start the second half. A Matt Lawrence jumper broke the run and got Newton back within five. A short Munds jumper with three seconds left in the period put Hutchinson back up by seven, 41-34.

Hutchinson opened the fourth quarter with a pullup jumper by Hayden Wilkens. A Braden Wells layup put the Salt Hawks up by 11 with 4:25 remaining. Roehm followed with a layup. Lane Pauls broke the shutout in the fourth quarter with a putback with 43.6 seconds remaining.

“Hutchinson played well on defense,” Cameron said. “They were able to pressure us, but we’ve seen pressure before. I think our guys are handling pressure much better now than at the beginning of the season. We rushed shots.”

Hutchinson improves to 10-4, 6-1 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 3-12, 0-7 in division play. The Railers host Derby at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“Derby isn’t going to be any easier,” Cameron said.
