A rigorous search and eight interviews seemed likely to produce a new assistant coach-offensive coordinator for the Bethel College football team.
But when the top candidates ultimately took jobs at other institutions, coach Travis Graber began thinking more seriously about the fact that there was “someone with the exact experience and knowledge I was looking for already here at Bethel” — athletic director Kent Allshouse.
Graber told the team of Allshouse’s appointment Jan. 18 and sent an email to the wider campus community Jan. 19.
There was “tremendous interest” in the assistant position after it opened last fall, Graber said, but in the end nothing panned out.
Allshouse has spent a total of 14 years coaching football since 1977, including as head coach, position coach and offensive coordinator. In his 15 years at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, where he was before coming to Bethel last summer, one of the roles Allshouse filled was assistant football coach, working with receivers and defensive backs.
“I spoke with some alumni about the idea (of asking Allshouse to apply,)” Graber said, “and the more we talked, the more right this idea seemed to me. I approached Kent and we were able to work out the details.”
Allshouse will be serving in the assistant coach position without pay, which Graber noted would “redirect some of those funds” to other parts of the football program.
