Rebels eliminated from NBC Midwest Regionals by Wheat Kings

The Newton Rebels were eliminated from the National Baseball Congress Midwest Regionals after a 5-4 loss to the Walter Johnson League rival Wichita Wheat Kings Wednesday afternoon at Stevens Field in Valley Center.

Drew Baker hit a bunt single to score a run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Wheat Kings the win. Wichita improves to 4-1 in the tournament and advances to the consolation quarterfinals against the Wichita Sluggers.

Newton, 23-13, finishes the 12-team tournament 1-2, tied for fifth place.

Newton took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on two hits and two errors. Andrew Revall tripled in the top of the sixth and came Wichita on a Trever Adams single.

Wichita came back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and two errors.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Wheat Kings leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and went to second on a bunt. Bryce Scott tied the game with an RBI double. After an intentional walk, John Beavers hit a bunt single to load the bases. Baker then hit a bunt single to end the game.

Beavers finished the game five for five hitting with an RBI. Scott was two for two with two runs scored and two RBIs. Baker went two for four with an RBI.

Adams went two for three for the Rebels with two RBIs. Joey Mendoza went two for four.

Newton starter Tony Pryor went six innings, allowing a run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Mathias Simmons took the loss, pitching the ninth.

Grant Cosby got the win for the Wheat Kings, allowing no runs and no hits with a walk and five strikeouts, facing seven batters. Starter Brent Adkisson went 7 2-3 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Newton plays a pair of games at Junction City at 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday, then opens play in the Walter Johnson League Tournament, which is Sunday through Wednesday in Wichita.
